With 11 games left in the regular season, the Carolina Hurricanes are in position to face a wild-card team in Round 1 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Whether they finish first or second in the Eastern Conference, the Hurricanes will have home ice entering their eighth straight playoff appearance, and here’s a look at three possible first-round opponents.
Ottawa Senators
If the playoffs began today, the Hurricanes would face the New York Islanders in Round 1. However, the Ottawa Senators are only one point back (86) with a game in hand, and this would be the more intense matchup.
Carolina still has one more game against the Senators, on April 4, but they’ve been successful in their first two contests this season, outscoring the Senators 8-4 while taking all four points.
The key to this series would be shutting down Tim Stützle. He has 32 goals and 75 points in 72 games this season, and he’s been on a tear in Brady Tkachuk’s absence (he missed 20 games). The ‘Canes would also have to keep an eye on Drake Batherson and Dylan Cozens.
Boston Bruins
In the last eight years, the Hurricanes have met the Bruins in the playoffs three times, with the Bruins holding a 2-1 edge. The season series in 2025-26 is even at 1-1. The teams play each other one more time, on April 7, which is Carolina’s last home game of the regular season.
The Bruins sit in the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference with 88 points, one ahead of the Islanders and two ahead of the Senators. If the Hurricanes do play the Bruins in the first round, expect it to be a hard-fought, seven-game series.

The players to watch on the Bruins are David Pastrnak, who has 90 points in 67 games, and former Hurricane Morgan Geekie, who has 34 goals and 62 points in 71 games. Defensively, Carolina cannot afford to underestimate Charlie McAvoy, who is solid at both ends of the ice.
Detroit Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings are three points out of the last wild-card spot, but they have two games in hand on the Islanders. Carolina came out of the regular-season series with a 2-0-1 record, while outscoring the Red Wings 13-8. Alex DeBrincat leads Detroit with 35 goals and 74 points in 71 games.
The Hurricanes would have to keep an eye on Lucas Raymond, who has 69 points in 69 games, including 22 goals, while Moritz Seider has been having a solid season defensively. He is fourth on the team in points (49) and leads with a plus-21.
The Red Wings are still within reach of a playoff spot, but they have dropped down the standings after spending much of the season above the postseason cutoff line.

The teams’ last playoff meeting was in the 2022 Stanley Cup Final, when the Red Wings defeated the Hurricanes in five games to win their tenth championship in franchise history.
Regardless of how it plays out, the Hurricanes, led by Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis, and Andrei Svechnikov, have the drive and playoff experience to face any of these opponents in the first round and come out on top. They are on a mission to make the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2006, and it begins with clinching their berth.
