3 Takeaways From Torrent’s 5-4 Win Over Frost – The Hockey Writers – Seattle Torrent

On Wednesday, April 22, the Seattle Torrent hosted the Minnesota Frost for their fourth matchup of the 2025-26 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season. Heading into this game, the Frost had won all three prior matchups. The Torrent were hoping to close out the season series on a strong note. 

The Frost scored within the first four minutes of the game to take an early lead. The Frost gave up the first penalty of the game, and the Torrent capitalized to bring the score to an even 1-1 at the end of 20 minutes. The Frost took another early lead, but two goals scored within nine seconds gave the Torrent their first lead of the game. Minnesota scored a power-play goal of their own nine minutes later to even the score at 3-3 after 40 minutes. 

Seattle scored two minutes into the final frame to take the lead. They scored an insurance goal as well, nine minutes later. The Frost attempted a comeback, including a goal with just 14 seconds left on the clock, but it was not enough, and the Torrent won 5-4 in regulation. The Frost won the season series, but the Torrent recorded their first win against the Frost in franchise history. 

Carpenter Had a Great Night 

The Torrent were down by a goal early in the second period, but it didn’t stay that way. Eight minutes into the period, Anna Wilgren took a shot from the blue line. Nicole Hensley made the initial save, but there was a mad scramble in front of the net. Theresa Schafzahl picked it up and passed it across the ice for Alex Carpenter. She lifted the puck on her stick and sent it into the net to tie the game 2-2. 

Carpenter also recorded an assist, making this her fifth multi-point game of the season. She currently has 19 points and is second overall in the Torrent’s standings, just under Julia Gosling, who has 20. She is a consistent playmaker for the Torrent and has continually leveled up her style of play throughout the season. She was a great pick-up from New York after last season.

David Nets Her First With Seattle 

The score was tied after Carpenter’s goal, but it didn’t stay that way for long. The Torrent won the initial faceoff after the goal and sent the puck into their offensive zone. Natalie Snodgrass battled for the puck behind the net with the Frost and won. She tried to send the puck into the net, but Hensley made the initial save. She was down on the ice, and Gabrielle David skated up and picked up the rebound. She sent it into the back of the net to put the Torrent in the lead just nine seconds after Carpenter’s goal. 

This goal marked David’s first with the Torrent. She was a late acquisition to Seattle, after they signed her to a standard player agreement on March 22, following Hilary Knight and Mikyla Grant-Mentis being placed on long-term injured reserve (LTIR). David spent the earlier part of the season in the Swedish Women’s Hockey League (SDE HF), where she recorded 42 points in 35 games. 

David has shifted between the top six and the bottom six forward groups. This game, she played on the first line alongside Schafzahl and Carpenter. This was an excellent decision on the coaching staff’s part, and the stat sheet demonstrates why. 

Torrent Back in First Place in the Gold Plan 

The Walter Cup race is about to heat up, but before that can happen, the race for first place in the Gold Plan is heating up. The Gold Plan is the PWHL’s way of ensuring the teams do not tank. Once a team is eliminated from playoff contention, any point they would have accrued towards the playoffs gets put into the Gold Plan instead. Whichever team has the most Gold Plan points at the end of the season earns the opportunity to select first overall in the entry draft. 

With their regulation win in this game, the Torrent now have four Gold Plan points and catapulted themselves into first place. They had one point they earned earlier from their overtime loss to the Vancouver Goldeneyes. The Torrent are currently competing against the Goldeneyes and the New York Sirens for the first overall pick. Each team can get three more points on Saturday. The Goldeneyes only have three and can max out at six. The Sirens don’t have any points yet. If the Torrent win their final game of the season, they will secure the first overall pick with seven points. 

Torrent Close Out the Season at Home 

The Torrent will play their final game of the 2025-26 PWHL season on Saturday, April 25, when they host the Montreal Victoire at 7 PM PT.
