One of the main reasons why the New York Rangers had the season they did was due to them lacking top-end talent, especially among their forward group. When they traded Artemi Panarin to the Los Angeles Kings, they lost their most dynamic forward, and now, they have multiple holes to fill in their top six. This is going to be a key area that general manager Chris Drury needs to be address, but it will be easier said than done. Here, we will go over why it will be hard for the Rangers to add top-end talent this summer.

A Very Weak Free Agent Class

The 2026 free-agent class had the chance to be the greatest of all time if some of the player on expiring contracts made it to the open market. Players like Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel, and Kirill Kaprizov would have had every team in the league vying for their services. Instead, they opted to re-sign with their current teams, as did most of the top players who could have been free agents this offseason. Now, there are very few, if any, players at all that can be seen as game-changing talent left as potential free agents.

The biggest name among the forwards is Alex Tuch of the Buffalo Sabres. He has yet to sign an extension with his hometown team, but with all the success the Sabres have had this season, why would he want to leave? If he ends up staying in Buffalo, the list of free agents after him is not very enticing. It is full of older players like Patrick Kane and Mats Zuccarello, and while these players are still productive, they would only be stop gaps if the Rangers decided to bring them in. If the Rangers are really trying to add a top-six forward this offseason, free agency is not the way to go.

Who Would Even Be Available Via Trade?

If free agency is a lost cause, the only way the Rangers could add top-end talent this offseason is if they make a trade. The big question now is who would even be available to trade for? Right now, there are two names that have been floated as potential trade pieces, and these two players are current captains of Canadian teams: Brady Tkachuk of the Ottawa Senators and Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Both of these teams are in different situations, but they could look to move these players in order to go in a different direction.

The Senators are currently down 3-0 in their first-round series to the Carolina Hurricanes, and Tkachuk has yet to record a point in the playoffs. If they do get swept and he remains a non-factor, it could be a sign that maybe it’s time to move on from him. There have been rumors of him wanting to play in the United States, and a trade like the one that occurred with his brother Matthew a few years back could make sense for the Senators if a team offers a good enough package. The Rangers have been rumored to have interest in Tkachuk for years now, and if he does become available, they will likely be all over him.

With Matthews and the Leafs, it seems like they are going into a retool/rebuild with how poorly they played this season. If he wants to play for a contender or play for a team in the United States, the Rangers could be a fit for him. They have a need for a top-line center, and Matthews has some Team USA connections with the Rangers in captain J.T. Miller and head coach Mike Sullivan. While it seems more likely that he stays in Toronto at least for now, he is a name to watch for the Rangers if he becomes available.

The Rangers Have Very Little to Trade From

Even if the Rangers wanted to trade for one of these star players, they have very little to offer in return. They aren’t going to trade a player like Gabe Perreault, who has shown that he can be a top-six NHL talent. If they aren’t trading him, they don’t have many other high-end prospects to move, and it would not be a smart move to trade their first-round pick this year, as it could be the first-overall pick if they win the 2026 Draft Lottery. Even if they don’t win the lottery, the pick can be no worse than fifth overall and the Rangers need to add to their farm system as this retool continues.

Just like he did at the 2026 Trade Deadline, Drury is going to listen to offers on most of his players. Three that c could bring back top-end talent are Vincent Trocheck, Braden Schneider, and Alexis Lafreniere. The issue with moving a player like Lafreniere is that he is already a top-six player on the team, and if moving him brings in another top-six forward, there is still going to be a hole in the top six. Drury is going to need to get creative if he wants to bring in top-end talent because right now, he does not have much to trade in order to bring in the players he wants.

It’s clear that one of the Rangers biggest needs is the addition of top-end talent. While Drury might want to add a top-six forward this offseason, it’s going to be hard given the weak free agent class and the trade market’s uncertainly. He should not make a big move for the sake of making a big move — that could set the team back even further — but needs to be patient. He should make his move only if the right player becomes available and the trade or signing makes sense.
