The NHL announced its finalists for the Bill Masterton Trophy on Monday, with Sabres’ defenseman Rasmus Dahlin being one of them, joining Jonathan Toews and Gabriel Landeskog.
The Masterton is awarded to the player who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey, and with what Dahlin has gone through since the summer, I would say him being a finalist is the right choice.
Dahlin’s Hardship Off the Ice
It all began in the summer of 2025, when Rasmus Dahlin and his fiancée, Carolina Matovac, were vacationing in France. What was supposed to be a peaceful getaway turned into a nightmare when Carolina suffered sudden heart failure, forcing doctors to perform an emergency heart transplant to save her life.
In September, the Sabres and Dahlin released an official statement revealing what had happened over the summer. The response was immediate and overwhelming. NHL players, team staff, fans, and the broader hockey community rallied around the couple, offering support, prayers, and encouragement during the most difficult period of their lives.

When training camp opened later that month, Dahlin reported as usual and tried to push forward. He started the season with the team, but it was clear something was off. His play lacked its usual sharpness and confidence, a reflection of the emotional weight he was carrying.
By November, Dahlin made the difficult but necessary decision to take a leave of absence and return to Sweden, where Carolina was still recovering from her transplant. It was the only choice that made sense. Some things are bigger than hockey, and the health of the person you love is at the top of that list.
Once again, the support poured in. Teammates, fans, and the entire Sabres organization backed him without hesitation. Head coach Lindy Ruff encouraged Dahlin to take as much time as he needed, reinforcing that the team stood firmly behind both him and Carolina throughout their ordeal.
Dahlin Bounced Back When He Returned From Leave of Absence
When Dahlin returned from his leave of absence, it was immediately clear that something inside him had shifted. The heaviness he carried through the early part of the season was gone. His posture was lighter, his energy sharper, and his game suddenly looked like him again. With Carolina recovering well back home, he finally had the peace of mind he’d been missing for months. The fear, the uncertainty, the constant emotional tug-of-war—all of it eased just enough for him to breathe again.
“She’s an absolute warrior,” Dahlin said when he rejoined the team. “It’s so fun to see her every day: she grinds every day, and she gets better every day that’s the most important. Wow, she’s inspired me and a lot of people, that’s for sure.” It wasn’t just a quote. It was the truth behind his resurgence.
In March, Carolina went to a game in Buffalo, and during a TV timeout, the Sabres recognized her, and she received a heartfelt standing ovation from the fans and players/coaches on both teams.
Dahlin officially returned to the Sabres on Nov. 15, 2025, and from that moment forward, he played like a man on a mission. Over the final 63 games of the regular season, he became one of the most productive defensemen in the NHL, piling up 65 points, fourth among all blueliners during that span with 18 goals (4th), 47 assists (5th), and an outstanding plus-29 rating (3rd). It was the kind of stretch that reminded everyone why he wears the “C,” why he’s the heartbeat of the franchise, and why his presence changes everything for Buffalo.
But his impact went far beyond the stat sheet. His return galvanized the entire locker room. The Sabres rallied around their captain, playing with a renewed sense of purpose and emotion. From Nov. 15 onward, Buffalo posted a staggering 45‑15‑5 record, a 95‑point pace that was the best in the NHL over that stretch. Every night, the team played like they were skating for something bigger than themselves, and in many ways, they were.
Dahlin’s comeback didn’t just elevate his own game. It elevated an entire franchise, and coming from me, both he and his fiancée, Carolina, are an inspiration to me and many others.
