Buffalo Sabres 2025-26 Player Report Card: Rasmus Dahlin – The Hockey Writers – Buffalo Sabres

If there was anyone who was going to be the leader of the Buffalo Sabres when they broke their record- long playoff drought, it was deservedly so Rasmus Dahlin. No player overcame more obstacles this past season, put in better work ethic, or was a better leader in every aspect imaginable, than him.

From his trying start to the season due to the health concerns of his fiancé, to seeing him battle through as she recovered, to being a staple for the Swedish Olympic team on their blue line, to ultimately being the Sabres best overall player, there was not a single thing that Dahlin fell short on. His effort, determination, and drive to haul this team back to a playoff berth was nothing short of breathtaking to watch.

Dahlin’s Inspiring Season Will Be Remembered

Despite Dahlin’s personal struggles at the start of the season and his short sabbatical not long after that, he managed to miss only five games. In his 77 games played, he put up a career high in points (74), plus/minus (plus-18), and shooting percentage (9.8%), while still managing to put up his second-highest tally in goals (19), assists (55), and power-play points (22). His stats stood out against his defensive teammates, as he led all Sabres defenders in every single major scoring category in the regular season AND the playoffs.

All of these measured him up against the NHL’s best, as he eventually secured a nomination for the Norris Trophy (NHL’s best defenseman), as well as a nomination for the Bill Masterton Trophy (NHL player that best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey). He ultimately fell short of winning both, finishing third in voting for the Norris Trophy and second for the Bill Masterton Trophy (ultimately surpassed by Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche).

From his amazing stats to his accolades by the end of the season, Dahlin was a force to be reckoned with. Nothing short of winning games and willing his team to victory on so many levels was going to satiate him, and it showed in how he played the game. It was a marvel to watch and to experience.

Grading Dahlin

There was no better player for the Sabres all season long. He was truly the heart and soul of this team in every sense of the idea. His determination, heart, leadership, and gameplay on the ice exemplified what it meant to be a Sabre, and he set the gold standard from here on out. With that said, his grades would look like this:

• Defense – A
• Leadership – A++++
• Playmaking – A+
• Teamwork – A+

Nothing but perfect marks all around for the captain. If there was something that needed to be done, he was the man to call upon. Need a response after a teammate is wronged? Dahlin was there to stick up for anyone. Need a scoring chance after being scored on? Dahlin was the first one to step up and generate it. Need someone to fire up or calm down the bench to keep things at the pace they wanted? Dahlin would be the first voice speaking up. He was nothing short of outstanding.

Dahlin’s Future In Buffalo

It would be foolish to think that Dahlin will be going anywhere. As the captain of the team and locked up on their blue line until 2032 with a pretty fair cap hit of $11 million, it is safe to say he will remain on this team for a long time. Dahlin is a player that I would argue ends up being a Sabre for his entire NHL career. From his connections in the city, to how welcomed and loved he is by the community, the chances that he would want to leave are slim to none.

Dahlin is a testament to what it means to be perseverant and to never let any sort of negativity or doubt defeat you. He fought through terrible things this season, and he will be immortalized as the captain who led the Sabres out of their playoff drought. Nobody can take away all that he achieved this season. It was just a shame they could not make it further in the playoffs. It would have been the most incredible story, and an even greater sight to see him lift the Stanley Cup.
