The Boston Bruins have traded Joonas Korpisalo to the New York Rangers in exchange for Kalle Vaisanen and a fourth-round pick in the 2028 NHL Entry Draft. The 32-year-old Korpisalo spent the past two seasons with the Bruins after being acquired by the team in the deal that sent Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators. He played in 58 games over that span and went 25-19-9 with a 3.03 goals-against average and .894 save percentage.
Korpisalo has two years remaining on his contract, which carries a $3 million cap hit for the Rangers. This sets him up to back up Igor Shesterkin in New York. The backup position was split between Jonathan Quick, Spencer Martin and Dylan Garand last season. With Quick retiring from the NHL following the 2025-26 season, the Rangers are filling the spot with another veteran former starter who can take some of the workload away from Shesterkin, who has played upwards of 51 games in five consecutive seasons.

Vaisanen was a fourth-round selection by the Rangers in 2021 and spent 51 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack last season. He scored three goals and four points in his first full season in the AHL and now gets a fresh start in the Bruins’ system, a system that seemingly needed new blood for the 2025-26 season.
Bruins Open the Door for DiPietro
For the Bruins, the deal opens up some cap space, but, more importantly, it paves the way for Michael DiPietro to become the team’s new backup goalie behind Jeremy Swayman.
DiPietro has been in the Bruins system since the 2022-23 season and has been stellar with the team over that time. Most notably, the 27-year-old has played in 85 games with the Providence Bruins over the past two seasons and has gone 60-16-6 with a 1.94 goals-against average and a .928 save percentage. He also earned consecutive Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Awards in the AHL as the league’s most outstanding goaltender, as well as the inaugural Doug Messier Award as the AHL’s most outstanding player.

DiPietro played has played in just four NHL games dating back to the 2018-19 season, but only one with the Bruins since being acquired by them in 2022. In his one appearance with the Bruins, DiPietro would play in just 6:03 of ice time in relief of Korpisalo, who was pulled from the game temporarily by concussion spotters. He made two saves in that time and helped the Bruins secure a 4-2 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
