Hurricanes’ Aho Could Have a Career Year with Stanley Cup Pressure Lifted – The Hockey Writers – Carolina Hurricanes

After 10 long seasons chasing the most coveted trophy in sports, the Carolina Hurricanes’ Sebastian Aho is a Stanley Cup Champion. The 29-year-old Finnish forward has been through it all since being drafted 35th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He was a young 19-year-old in his rookie season (2016-17), finishing with 24 goals and 49 points in 82 games. Aho was part of the last couple of seasons when the Hurricanes were not making the playoffs, and then saw Rod Brind’Amour take over as head coach in 2018-19.

Fast forward eight seasons, and now he has lifted Lord Stanley above his head. Through the downs, the ups, the heartbreaks, and so much more, Aho has seen and done it all in Raleigh. Now that he has won a Stanley Cup, is the pressure finally off, and is he entering the golden era of his career?

Finally Reached the Mountain Top

During the 2025-26 season, Aho finished with 27 goals, 53 assists, and 80 points in 79 games, leading the team in assists and points. In 19 playoff games, he had five goals and 12 points. If you ask any Hurricanes fan the most memorable goal for Aho in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, they’ll tell you about his goal in Game 5 and the pure emotion that poured out of him.

It was clear how much that goal meant to him, especially after the long road it took to get there. Back in Feb. 2025, Aho wrote an article with The Players’ Tribune in an open letter to the fans. He opened the letter by talking about playoff losses. “I think about the playoff losses a lot. It hurt then, and it hurts now. Each one of them stays with me. It stays with us.”

This was a few months before losing in the Eastern Conference Final to the Florida Panthers for the second time in three seasons. He also mentioned how badly he wanted to win a Cup in Raleigh, especially with how fans adore Brind’Amour when the Hurricanes won it the first time.

“I saw the way Roddy was treated, the love he had for the city. I wanted that. My wife and I love living in Raleigh. This is our place. This is where we’re supposed to be. And also: I’m a bit stubborn. I’m not giving up until we win. I promise that. I think I’m a Hurricane for a reason. I know what that reason is. And I will do everything in my power to make it happen.”

On June 14, Aho and the Hurricanes finally won it all. When there are conversations about how much it meant to Aho and Brind’Amour, the images of them embracing right away say it all. Aho even took the time to shout out Brind’Amour in his Tribune piece, “I want to shout out Coach for a second here. Roddy. Nobody gets what it means to wear this sweater more than him. He’s got this connection with fans, man…. It’s crazy. He’s a legend.”

Aho continued, “He’s an incredible speaker. He just has this way of connecting with the guys that’s completely genuine and honest. He feels like a teammate. Like he’s in the battle with you. And he sets the bar so high. He’s the hardest-working guy every day. In the gym, in the film room, he is the culture. And I wanted to talk about him because I know Canes fans appreciate him.”

Now that winning a Stanley Cup is checked off, could we see a pressure-free Aho in 2026-27?

Possible 90-Point Season for Aho?

It’s been clear how much winning a Stanley Cup weighed on Aho, especially after coming so close in the two Eastern Conference Final appearances against the Panthers. However, now that the Hurricanes have won it, could we see Aho enter a golden era of his career?

The closest Aho has gotten to 90 points was during the 2023-24 season, when he finished with 36 goals and 89 points. The last two seasons have seen him tally 74 and 80 points, respectively. Those seasons were filled with him pushing himself to get over the hump. There is a chance he could reach 90 points this upcoming season since he no longer has that weight on his back and the consciousness of winning a Stanley Cup. Now the focus is on defending the title instead of chasing after his first one.

Could a mindset change of defending a Cup open up Aho to playing more loose? There is a good possibility of that happening, especially given how competitive he is. He won’t have to grip the stick too hard or be tough on himself if he has a few games without a goal. This could give Aho a chance to play with more confidence and be able to have fun on the ice without the constant pressure of “this is finally the year for the Hurricanes?” in his ear.

When it comes down to it, there is a belief that we could see another level from Aho this upcoming season. Are the Hurricanes and fans in for a 90- to 100-point Aho this season? With the team playing without Seth Jarvis for the first couple of months, he will be leaned on more to provide that scoring alongside Andrei Svechnikov, Nikolaj Ehlers, Jackson Blake, and others on the roster.

Aho is already going to be the greatest Hurricanes player in franchise history when his career is all said and done. That said, could 2026-27 add to that lore of Aho in Carolina? Only time will tell, but make no mistake, the Hurricanes and Aho are looking to bring the Stanley Cup back to Raleigh for a third time.
