Evgeny Kuznetsov’s NHL Chapter Ends.
Evgeny Kuznetsov Contract
Evgeny Kuznetsov, the once-dynamic forward who played a pivotal role in the Washington Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup victory, has parted ways with the Carolina Hurricanes. The team announced on Thursday the termination of Kuznetsov’s contract, a decision that comes just one day after placing him on unconditional waivers.
Carolina Hurricanes
Kuznetsov’s departure marks the end of an eight-year, $62.4 million deal he inked with Washington in 2017. The contract, carrying an annual value of $7.8 million, still had one year remaining. However, the Capitals retained half of his salary when they traded him to Carolina last March in exchange for a 2025 third-round draft pick. Carolina’s general manager, Eric Tulsky, explained that mutual agreement led to this outcome, expressing gratitude for Kuznetsov’s contributions and wishing him well.
Kuznetsov contract terminated
Drafted 26th overall by Washington in 2010, Kuznetsov carved a notable NHL career. Over 743 games, he amassed an impressive 575 points, showcasing his offensive prowess. His playoff performances were equally stellar, with 73 points in 77 games, including a standout 2018 postseason where he led all scorers with 32 points, narrowly missing the Conn Smythe Trophy. His overtime heroics in Game 6 of the 2018 Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Pittsburgh Penguins will be etched in Capitals lore, as his goal propelled the team to the conference finals for the first time since 1998.
Kuznetsov NHL career
While Kuznetsov’s early career was marked by exceptional talent and production, his performance dipped in recent seasons. After a career-high 83-point campaign in 2017-18, his scoring numbers declined. The Capitals missed the playoffs in 2023 for the first time since 2014, a season in which Kuznetsov struggled and also entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program twice.
Kuznetsov’s stint with Carolina was brief but impactful. He contributed seven points in 20 regular-season games and played a key role in the Hurricanes’ first-round playoff series against the New York Islanders.

Beyond the NHL, Kuznetsov’s international resume includes a silver medal at the 2009 U18 World Championship, gold at the 2011 World Junior Championship, silver at the 2012 World Juniors, and gold at the 2014 World Championship.
As Kuznetsov moves on from his NHL career, the hockey world will undoubtedly watch with interest to see what the next chapter holds for this talented forward.
