Maple Leafs Week Ahead: Schedule & Storylines – Post Trade Deadline, Losing Streak & More – The Hockey Writers – Toronto Maple Leafs

Well, it’s been a week in Leafs Land. As the Toronto Maple Leafs try and push forward in their upcoming week of games, there are some ugly storylines hanging around the club, some that no one would have expected after how the first nine seasons went in this era of Maple Leafs hockey.

Unfortunately, it has been a difficult week for the Maple Leafs and their fan base. And, as we look forward to next week, it looks like it could continue to be a rough time. However, that can all be silenced if they can manage to scrap out just one win and snap their seven-game losing streak.

Here is the latest news and updates around the Maple Leafs and their schedule for the week of March 9-15, 2026.

Post Trade Deadline Damage

Now that the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline has come and gone, there has been a fair amount of talk about if Brad Treliving did enough to set this team up for the offseason. Many fans felt that he should have sold off more assets such as Oliver Ekman-Larsson and even Dakota Joshua. However, it seemed like the front office’s plan was to just focus on players on expiring deals. Which led to Bobby McMann and Scott Laughton being dealt. The one trade that surprised a lot of NHL insiders was the Nicolas Roy trade with the Colorado Avalanche. That was thought to be in lieu of a Nazem Kadri trade but then the Avalanche ended up making that trade as well. Regardless, it landed the Maple Leafs a first-round pick next season which is something they were lacking.

Outside of that, the deadline was fairly underwhelming. The McMann and Laughton deals came right down to the wire and when they were reported, fans figured it would be for draft picks. The McMann deal fetched the Maple Leafs a second-round pick in 2027 and a fifth-round pick in the upcoming draft. Which was a decent return, but obviously not what the reported asking price was. As for the Laughton deal, at first it had fans confused. The reported return was just a third-round pick. But when more information was released, it was a conditional pick that becomes a second if the Los Angeles Kings make the playoffs. That had fans breathing a bit easier, but considering what they gave up for him just a season ago, fans were fairly mad at Treliving for his return for Laughton.

Unfortunately, that’s what happens when deals get down to the last hour. The asking price drops and if you want to sell assets, you take whatever is being offered. Which has some fans feeling a bit disappointed with how the deadline went.

An Embarrassing Seven Game Losing Streak

As mentioned above, it has been a tough few weeks for the organization and its fan base. Since the Olympic break they haven’t won a game. They are losers of seven straight and the boo birds are out at Scotiabank Arena. Over that seven-game losing streak, their captain Auston Matthews hasn’t been producing. He has just two assists in his last five games, which is concerning because he was coming off such a high after winning the gold medal at the Olympics.

Unfortunately, the Maple Leafs schedule doesn’t get easier. They play the Montreal Canadiens, Anaheim Ducks and Buffalo Sabres over the next week, which are all playoff teams. At this point, there is no saving the season, but at least play well enough to have the fans’ support. Right now, all there is are boos and chants to fire both Treliving and Craig Berube.
