The Detroit Red Wings have acquired forward David Perron from the Ottawa Senators. In exchange, the Senators are receiving a conditional fourth-round pick in the upcoming draft. The Senators will acquire the Columbus Blue Jackets’ fourth-round pick if Perron plays in a game with the Wings, whether it be in the regular season or the playoffs.
Red Wings Add Scorer With Playoff Experience
The Red Wings have not reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs since the 2015-16 season. They are currently in position to return this season, sitting in third place in the Atlantic Division.
Perron can help the Red Wings finish the job and return to the playoffs. Furthermore, the 37-year-old has experience in the playoffs, having scored 26 career goals in the playoffs. He has also reached the Stanley Cup Final twice, doing so with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2018 and then with the St. Louis Blues in 2019. Perron helped the Blues win their first Stanley Cup that season.
Perron has played in 49 games for the Senators this season, scoring 10 goals. He has not played since late January due to a sports hernia. He is due to return sometime in March, which would be just in time for the final push for the playoffs.
With the Red Wings, Perron will likely play on the middle lines. It can be assumed he will also get a look at the team’s power play given his success with the man advantage in his career.
For Perron, this will be his second stint with the Red Wings in his career. He signed with the team after the 2021-22 season. He played two seasons in Detroit before joining the Senators prior to the 2023-24 season.
Senators Make Another Trade
The eve of the trade deadline has been a busy one for the Senators. The team made a trade earlier on Thursday, acquiring Warren Foegele from the Los Angeles Kings.

Adding Foegele suggests that the Senators are not giving up on the playoffs. Trading Perron seems to be a case of the organization moving on from an injured veteran while adding some draft capital in the process. This also clears some cap space and a roster should the Senators wish to make another trade.
