Vertti Svensk is a defenseman who makes you lean forward in your chair. Not because he does something spectacular every shift, but because you never quite know what is coming next. The 6-foot-1, 168-pound left-shot blueliner out of Joensuu has the skating foundation to be a high-impact puck mover at the professional level, and his 2025-26 season has been a study in how quickly a Finnish prospect can force his way into conversations he was not part of a year ago.
Svensk grew up in Jokipojat’s system, a program in eastern Finland without a U20 SM-sarja team, which meant his draft-year visibility lagged behind peers developing at larger clubs. He jumped from U18 Mestis to U20 Mestis as a 16-year-old, a fast track through a smaller pipeline, and earned a midseason loan to SaiPa during 2024-25 which later became permanent. By the start of 2025-26, he was logging upward of 25 minutes per night for SaiPa’s U20 squad while also earning call-ups to Ketterä in Mestis and to SaiPa’s Liiga roster. Last December, SaiPa signed him to a contract extension through 2026-27, an organizational bet on a player whose tools are obvious even when his decision-making is still catching up.
The U20 SM-sarja production tells the offensive story clearly. Through 21 games, Svensk posted four goals and 28 assists for 32 points, a pace that reflects how much of SaiPa’s junior offense runs through him. He has quarterbacked the power play, used his edges to walk the blue line, and shown the kind of deceptive playmaking (shot fakes that freeze penalty kill structures, quick feeds through seams) that make scouts envision a modern, mobile puck mover at higher levels.

His Liiga sample is smaller and more realistic. In 18 regular-season games plus one playoff appearance, Svensk has registered zero goals and one assist. His ice time has been limited, primarily as a seventh defenseman, and SaiPa has even deployed him on the wing for a handful of Liiga games. That positional experimentation is not a red flag on its own; rather, it reflects a coaching staff trying to find ways to get a talented teenager on the ice while acknowledging his defensive-zone reads are not yet consistent enough for regular Liiga shifts on the back end.
Svensk’s skating is the anchor of his projection. Finnish scouting circles have drawn comparisons to Miro Heiskanen’s fluidity, which is aggressive praise, but the mechanical baseline is genuinely impressive. He is a dynamic, fluid mover with excellent edge control, able to carry the puck end to end and evade pressure through quick directional changes. His acceleration, his ability to close on attackers in transition, and his comfort carrying the puck through traffic all grade well above the typical Finnish draft-eligible defenseman. When he retrieves a puck in his own zone and opens the jets to beat a forecheck, the gap between him and most players his age is visible immediately.
The inconsistency lies in what happens after the skating creates those advantages. Svensk can look like a player who wants to do everything himself, holding the puck a beat too long, forcing carries through traffic when a simple outlet pass would move the team up ice faster. His defensive-zone positioning can lag when the pace increases, particularly in net-front coverage and on quick rotations where decisiveness matters more than athleticism. He is engaged without the puck (he closes the blue line well, competes in board battles, and marks his man to deny the middle), but the errors are the kind that get amplified in Liiga and would be punished harder at higher levels.

The range on Svensk is wide, which is the nature of boom-or-bust defensemen with elite skating and unfinished defensive habits. Tony Ferrari of The Hockey News had him 32nd in his February rankings, noting his offensive tools and willingness to try things while calling him a project. SMAHT Scouting has him 35th. The consolidated ranking at 66th and Central Scouting’s 84th among EU skaters at midterm reflect the skepticism that Svensk’s Liiga sample generates.
A realistic landing zone is the second to third round, with the final number depending on how evaluators weigh the skating upside against the defensive risk. Teams that develop defensemen patiently and value transition ability will be the most interested. Organizations looking for a plug-and-play defender will pass.
