The full NHL schedules have been released for all 32 teams, which means it’s officially time to count down to the 2026-27 season. With the first 84-game season ready to take place, the regular season will be starting about 10 days earlier than it has in previous seasons.
For the Buffalo Sabres, they will have numerous games that you should look forward to (84 of them to be exact). What are the five must-watch games for the Sabres this season?
Oct. 1 @ Columbus Blue Jackets
The Sabres open their season on the road against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Oct. 1 at 7:00 p.m. ET. After a long summer and an offseason filled with expectation, the Sabres enter the season looking to replicate and build on their impressive 2025-26 campaign, in which they eclipsed 50 wins and won the Atlantic Division title.
This opener also marks the beginning of a crucial season for several young Sabres who are ready to take the next step and make a name for themselves. Konsta Helenius, who appeared in nine regular‑season games and three playoff contests last season, will be looking to carve out a full‑time role.
Noah Ostlund, fresh off a 60‑game rookie season and three playoff appearances, aims to elevate his game even further. Add in Jiri Kulich, Olen Zellweger, and Louis Crevier, all players with the talent and upside to impact the roster, and Buffalo’s youth movement becomes one of the most intriguing storylines heading into opening night.

For a team with rising expectations and a growing identity, this first game in Columbus is more than just the start of the schedule. It’s the first chance for Buffalo’s next wave to show they’re ready to help push the Sabres toward another playoff run.
Oct. 3 vs. Chicago Blackhawks
The Sabres’ home opener arrives on Oct. 3, when Buffalo hosts the Chicago Blackhawks for a 7:00 p.m. ET puck drop. It’s game one of 42 at KeyBank Center, and you can expect the building to be buzzing from warmups to the final horn. After last season’s breakthrough, fans will be loud, locked in, and ready to see whether this team can take another step forward.
This opener is the perfect chance for the Sabres to show their fans that last season wasn’t a fluke, that the roster has improved, that the identity has strengthened, and that winning hockey is becoming the standard again in Buffalo.
Unfortunately, there likely won’t be a showing from young superstar Connor Bedard, who has been ruled out for four months following shoulder surgery. Even without Bedard, though, this matchup still carries weight. It’s the first opportunity for Buffalo to set the tone, establish momentum, and remind the league that KeyBank Center is becoming one of the toughest buildings to walk into.
Jan. 9 vs. Carolina Hurricanes
On Jan. 9, 2027, the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes roll into Buffalo for a 7:00 p.m. ET showdown, and they’re bringing back the same roster that bulldozed its way to a championship. For the Sabres, this isn’t just another midseason matchup. It’s a measuring‑stick game against one of the Eastern Conference’s elite. If Buffalo wants to prove it belongs in the contender conversation, these are the nights when statements have to be made.
Last season, the Sabres went 1-2-0 against Carolina, and every one of those games showed just how relentless the Hurricanes can be. This season, the two teams meet three times again, giving Buffalo multiple chances to flip the narrative. With an improved roster, more depth, and a young core that’s starting to look genuinely dangerous, the Sabres have an opportunity to show the rest of the conference that they’re no longer the team chasing contenders; they’re becoming one.
When the champs come to town, you find out what you really are. On Jan. 9, Buffalo gets its shot to prove that every team in the East should be paying attention.
Feb. 27 vs. Toronto Maple Leafs
On Feb. 27, 2027, the Sabres host the Toronto Maple Leafs in one of the league’s most heated rivalries. This matchup earns a spot on the list because the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, Gavin McKenna, comes to town to take on the Sabres.
McKenna is one of the most exciting players in all of hockey and has dominated every single league he has been a part of. I would fully expect him to light up the NHL as well. With him playing within the division, the Sabres are going to see him plenty of times, and this game marks the second meeting between Buffalo and McKenna.
April 10 vs. Detroit Red Wings
Last but not least, the Sabres close out their regular season with a heavyweight divisional clash against the Detroit Red Wings, a matchup that always seems to carry extra meaning. With four of their final five games at home, the Sabres enter the stretch run with a legitimate chance to control their own fate in front of a fired‑up KeyBank Center crowd.
If the season unfolds the way this roster suggests it can, this finale won’t just be another game on the schedule. It could be the moment Buffalo locks in playoff positioning, clinches a berth, or delivers one last statement before the real battle begins. The hope, and the expectation, is that when the final horn sounds against Detroit, hockey in Buffalo is far from over.
From the season opener to the regular-season finale, every game is a must-watch for the Sabres. The roster is loaded with talent, and they’re such a fun and exciting team to watch night in and night out.
