After an awful first week back after the Olympic break, the Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves further from a playoff spot and closer to a full-on fire sale at the deadline. With the 2026 Trade Deadline just days away, this is shaping up to be a very interesting week for Toronto.

Here is the latest news and updates around the Maple Leafs and their schedule for the week of March 2-9, 2026.
Berube’s Future
As mentioned, the first week back for the Maple Leafs was an embarrassing one. They dropped all three games against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers, and Ottawa Senators and looked awful in all of them. They were outscored 14-5, and for most of the games looked extremely disengaged. That has raised some questions regarding the future of Craig Berube, who has appeared to be losing the room.

The players don’t seem to be listening to his message at all. It all came to light when he spoke after the loss to the Senators and had this to say.
“When I look at the game or show tape and go over things, there is a certain way we need to play the game. But I can’t give guys [points to head] or [points to heart]. They have to come with that. That is on them. They have to bring the heart and competitiveness that is needed. They have to bring that. They have to want to bring that.
We can bring the Xs and Os. I can go in there and yell and scream at them all I want. That doesn’t do anything, either.”
If this isn’t a telltale sign that he has lost the room, I’m not sure what is. He has publicly stated that he can “yell and scream at them” and it doesn’t do anything. It seems like it is just a matter of time before he is fired. However, it doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen before Friday’s trade deadline.
Maple Leafs’ Deadline Plans
With the deadline just a few days away, the next week is going to be an interesting one. According to Elliotte Friedman, the Maple Leafs are now expanding the list of available players. They are considering trading players that have term on their deals.
“A lot of the talk was about the UFAs, and what they could do, but the word around the Maple Leafs now is that they’re widening their scope of what they’d consider. I don’t think it is anything like Matthews or Nylander — I don’t think we’re talking about anything like that — but the word around the league is that they’re widening their ideas of what they may consider. They are talking a bit more about players with term.”
It is clear that Auston Matthews, William Nylander, John Tavares, and Matthew Knies are going to be safe. However, that doesn’t rule out the idea of them trading the likes of Morgan Rielly, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, or even Max Domi, who all carry term and bigger cap hits.

Unfortunately, because of how bad they’ve played over the last week, it is going to trigger a full-on retool to try and change the culture on and off the ice. And by Friday at 3:00 pm, Leafs Nation will know just how far they are planning to go.
Maple Leafs Upcoming Schedule
The Maple Leafs have three games on tap this week. With the trade deadline Friday, they are fortunate enough to have that day off, which could be good considering they could be a busy team selling off assets. They only have one more game at home before the deadline, which is tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers. They then head on the road for two games in New Jersey and New York.
