The 2026 NHL Draft features several intriguing defencemen who can expect to hear their names called very early, but one of the most skilled defencemen in this year’s draft class might also be one of the most overlooked. Axel Elofsson, a speedy, right-shot offensive defenceman from the small city of Ulricehamn in southern Sweden, has continued to prove he’s an incredible talent, yet sits well below his peers in most draft rankings.

Elofsson’s first big break came at the 2025-26 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, where he emerged as one of Sweden’s biggest stars. After five games, he had tied the record for the most points by a defenceman in tournament history, matching Oleg Tverdovsky’s 11 points from 1992, while also tying Jarome Iginla and Brett McLean’s record of nine assists. Unfortunately, Elofsson were silenced by the United States, despite beating them earlier in the tournament.

But Elofsson wasn’t done. He returned to his U20 club in Örebro and led all defencemen with 41 points in 32 games, which earned him the league’s Defenceman of the Year award. It was a scoring pace that hadn’t been seen in years. Not even Erik Karlsson was as dominant with the puck at 18, finishing with 37 points in 38 games in 2007-08. Then, he capped off his season with a gold medal at the U18 World Junior Championship.

Elofsson’s game is built on puck movement. He has excellent vision, and when he gets the puck, he can quickly move it up to an open teammate before his opponents even realize he’s passed it. He’s creative and deceptive with his passes, making him almost impossible to defend against when he’s on the attack. His positioning also helps him control the flow of the game from the blue line, and he’s especially effective at quarterbacking a power play unit. Giving him just a little extra room really shows off how well he uses his quickness and agility to create space and find creative avenues to pass the puck.

While defending, Elofsson can be a one-on-one nightmare. He aggressively fights for possession, using a combination of body position, quick pivots, and an active stick to force a defender off the puck that he can then quickly scoop up. He is also very good at protecting the puck once he has it on his stick, once again using positioning and agility to push attackers off-kilter. If he needs some extra space, one of his favourite moves is to use his skates to create room, bouncing the puck off his blade as he continues moving forward.

All of these aspects make Elofsson sound just as impactful as a player like Carson Carels, who is projected to be a top-five selection, or Malte Gustafsson, who could be selected in the top 16. Both defenders were far less productive internationally than Elofsson, yet have received far more praise.

One big reason for that is that Elofsson’s overall game is still largely a work in progress. He is fantastic with the puck on his stick and has a lot of promising tendencies when defending and pressuring opponents, but his defensive sense is unrefined, and he can often get caught trying to do too much, which can lead to turnovers and mistakes. He also lacks an explosive first step when carrying the puck up the ice, and while he has plenty of mobility, his top speed isn’t as high as one might expect from a strong skater like him.

But the biggest factor keeping Elofsson under the radar is his size. At 5-foot-11 and just 165 pounds, he’s on the smaller side, and although he’s driven and competitive, he hasn’t fared well against bigger, stronger opponents. That hasn’t stopped him from trying, but he’ll need to add quite a bit of muscle as he goes on to the next level.

None of this is surprising to Elofsson, though. He knows he has to work on his game, which is why he signed a two-year deal with IK Oskarhamn of the Allsvenskan, Sweden’s second-best hockey league. He’s already got six Swedish Hockey League (SHL) games under his belt, and if he continues to put in the work, he’s on the right path to becoming one of Sweden’s next great offensive defenders.

Based on talent alone, Elofsson should be, at the very least, a second-round pick. His game is still raw, but he has an NHL-calibre skillset. The only issue is his size. While that hasn’t held him back so far in his career, NHL teams are still hesitant to use a high pick on a smaller defenceman, regardless of how well they play. That unfortunately means that Elofsson likely won’t hear his name called until the third round at the earliest.

NHL Potential

Elofsson currently projects as a second-pair defenceman with the ability to drive a power play, but will take a long time to get there. He may play a similar style to the Hutson brothers, relying on speed and puck movement to drive the offence and maintain possession, but it will take years of development and patience for him to round out the rough corners of his game. If a team is willing to wait, though, he has the potential to become a highly effective NHLer.
