Carolina Hurricanes’ Sean Walker Continues to Be Underrated on a Stellar Blueline – The Hockey Writers – Carolina Hurricanes

When looking at the Carolina Hurricanes blueline, the names that stand out right away are Jaccob Slavin, K’Andre Miller, and Shayne Gostisbehere. It makes sense when you’re discussing the best defensive defenseman in the NHL, along with two guys who can bring it offensively. However, there is one other player who is overlooked, especially for what he’s done during his time with the Hurricanes. If you want to talk about the Hurricanes blueline, Sean Walker has to be included in those conversations.

Walker-ing in a Stanley Cup Summer

When it comes to Walker, he does his job night in and night out, while being one of the most underrated guys on the Hurricanes blueline. It’s not lost within the locker room, especially from the coaching staff, how impactful Walker can be.

Going back to Round 2 of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, head coach Rod Brind’Amour stated when asked about Walker, “I’m glad you mentioned Walks. I think he’s been under the radar, really, all year. Whatever we ask him to do, he kind of fills in or takes charge every night. He took the lead back there. He was really solid.”

Even during the 2025-26 regular season, Walker was the anchor for a blueline group that was decimated with injuries for the first few months. Back in November, Brind’Amour talked about how impactful Walker was for them at that point in the season. “What we’ve asked him to do, the minutes, and the matchups, he’s doing everything. (Power play, penalty kill) he’s taken all the slack for the guys who are out and done an amazing job.”

During the course of the season, Slavin played in only 39 games, while Gostisbehere was out with four different injuries and Miller missed time, too. Back in July 2025, The Hockey Writers had a story about how Walker was poised for an impactful second season in Raleigh. Safe to say, that happened.

Walker finished with nine goals, 22 assists, and 31 points in 81 games, along with being a plus-6. All of those were career highs for the 31-year-old Ontario native. He followed that up with three assists and a plus-11 in 19 playoff games en route to his first-ever Stanley Cup. Walker did all of that while balancing being a new father and pushing for a Stanley Cup.

During the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Walker stated after being asked about being a father and this deep into the playoffs at the time, “It’s been great! Obviously, we had that stretch where we were home for 12 days. You probably wouldn’t get that during the regular season, so it’s been amazing to be around. Still a little stressful at the playoffs and the point we’re at, but every day has been amazing.”

Now Walker is a Stanley Cup champion and is looking to defend the crown this upcoming season. Walker is entering the third season of his five-year, $18 million deal, paying him $3.6 million annually. That deal is viewed as an absolute steal for what he’s done since joining the Hurricanes before the 2024-25 season.

Walker averaged 21:49 of ice time during the regular season, then 22:39 during the playoffs, both career highs. That is putting in some serious minutes for the Hurricanes, especially when taking the pressure off Slavin, who usually logs a huge amount of minutes. The balance of ice time could be beneficial for Slavin, Walker, and the Hurricanes in the long run, especially this upcoming season where they look to defend their Stanley Cup crown.

It’ll be an interesting third season in Raleigh for Walker as he looks to carry his new career-highs into a possible back-to-back Cup run. When it comes down to it, Walker is an underrated defenseman not only in Raleigh, but in the NHL as well.
