Hockey families are woven into the sport’s fabric, but few threads stretch as far as the Szongoth name in Hungarian hockey. Domán Kristóf Szongoth, a 6-foot-1, 198-pound center, is the third generation of his family to pursue the game professionally. His grandfather, Gábor, played domestically. His father, Kristóf, played across Hungarian leagues before transitioning into coaching, where he now serves as head coach of Hungary’s junior national development program. His stepmother, Gyöngyi Szongoth-Szlaby, played women’s hockey for MAC Marilyn Budapest. Even his uncle Gergely and cousins Döme and Bende are in the game, the latter currently with Notre Dame Hounds U18 Prep in Canada. The sport is not a career choice for the Szongoth family. It is the family business.
What separates Domán from that lineage is trajectory. No Hungarian-born player has been drafted since János Vas was selected by the Dallas Stars in 2002. Szongoth, ranked 38th among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting in its final rankings, has a realistic shot at ending that 24-year drought.
Szongoth moved to Finland as a teenager, joining KooKoo’s junior system in Kouvola and developing through the club’s U16 and U18 programs before signing a contract extension with KooKoo’s Liiga roster in August 2024. That extension runs through 2026-27 and keeps him tied to one of Finland’s top development environments. His primary minutes in 2025-26 came with KooKoo U20 in Finland’s U20 SM-sarja, where he posted 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points in 23 games, a significant jump from the 16 points in 39 games he produced the season prior.
The leap was not limited to Finnish junior play. Szongoth’s international workload for Hungary is staggering for a draft-eligible prospect. At 16, he debuted for Hungary’s senior team at the 2024 Olympic Qualifying tournament in Bratislava, scoring a goal against Kazakhstan in only his second senior appearance. He then played seven games at the 2025 IIHF World Championship in the top division, logging the highest time on ice among Hungarian forwards. That is not a ceremonial call-up. That is a teenager carrying real minutes against men.
At the age-appropriate international level, Szongoth was dominant. He scored five goals and added one assist for six points in five games at the 2026 IIHF U18 World Championship Division I Group A, and put up three goals and five assists for eight points in five games at the 2026 U20 World Championship Division I Group B. Across three U18 World Championship Division I tournaments (2024, 2025, 2026), he compiled eight goals and five assists in 15 games while competing against older players as a double underage in his first appearance.
His game revolves around processing speed and shot quality. In an interview at the 2024 Olympic qualifiers, Szongoth named Aleksander Barkov as the player he models his game after, a revealing choice. Barkov is not a flashy comparison. It speaks to a player who values two-way discipline, positional intelligence, and the ability to win pucks in contested areas rather than pure offensive fireworks. At 6-foot-1 and 198 pounds, Szongoth already has the frame to compete physically, and his willingness to play a senior men’s game as a teenager suggests the compete level is legitimate.
The question marks are fair. The U20 SM-sarja is a respected development league, but it sits below the Liiga and does not carry the same translation weight as the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), Finland’s Liiga, or even the top Canadian Hockey League (CHL) circuits. Szongoth’s 1.22 points-per-game rate at the U20 level is strong but not elite by the standard of top-round draft picks in that league. His senior international production (zero points in seven World Championship games) is understandable given the competition gap Hungary faces, but it leaves evaluators with limited data on how his skill set holds up against top-tier opponents in meaningful minutes.
He also lacks the power-play quarterbacking or highlight-reel playmaking that tends to push middle-round forwards up boards. His value is in his completeness: skating, shot, size, compete, and the maturity that comes from playing in professional environments since age 16.

Szongoth projects as a fourth-to-sixth round selection, with the kind of profile that appeals to clubs willing to invest time in a long development runway. His NHL Central Scouting ranking of 38th among EU skaters places him firmly in the draft-eligible conversation, and his physical tools and international track record give him a floor that pure-skill players from lower-profile leagues do not always have. A team with patience and a European development pipeline could find real value here. If he earns regular Liiga minutes next season, his stock will move.

If a club selects him, the bet is on the player he becomes at 21 or 22, not the one he is today. For a Hungarian hockey program that has not produced an NHL draft pick in over two decades, Szongoth represents something larger than his individual projection. He is proof that the country’s investment in player development is starting to produce results.
