The Toronto Maple Leafs have undergone quite a bit of change in recent weeks, including the coaching staff changes announced on Tuesday. You could argue the team is better or worse, but you can’t argue it’s the same.
It will be interesting to see how much the team improves in the standings and whether new GM John Chayka continues to add. On the latest episode of the “32 Thoughts” podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Maple Leafs are still shopping, hoping to complete a blockbuster deal if an opportunity arises.
“I think Toronto is also still hopeful to add another difference maker. Now, it may not be now; it may be later, but I think that’s what they’re considering,” Friedman said.
What Might the Maple Leafs Add Sooner Rather Than Later?
If the Maple Leafs want to be active before the season begins, who might they add? A few pieces are potentially available.
Patrick Kane
Long rumored as a fit, and with recent comments by Gavin McKenna that Kane was his idol, Patrick Kane might be interesting. It doesn’t seem like Kane is going back to the Detroit Red Wings. Instead, rumors have him linking up with the Buffalo Sabres. What if Toronto presented him with a better option?

Given that Daniel Alfredsson just ditched the Senators for the Leafs, it wouldn’t be the weirdest thing to see Kane choose Toronto over his hometown.
Production has held up (57 points in 67 games last season), but at 38, age and health have to be concerns. A short-term, low-cap, bonus-heavy deal could make sense here.
Alex Killorn
The Anaheim Ducks will be an intriguing team to keep an eye on over the next few days. Embroiled in this Leo Carlsson offer-sheet drama, that organization will face fallout. If they match on Carlsson, they’ll need to find the cap space not just for his $18 million, but for the deals that follow with Cutter Gauthier and Beckett Sennecke.
Could this mean someone like Alex Killorn becomes available? He can play either wing, and is a veteran leader with playoff experience. He’s in the final season of a deal that will see him make $6.25 million, and the Ducks might have little choice but to move him for pennies on the dollar.
He does hold some modified trade protection.
Anthony Mantha
Why is Anthony Mantha still unsigned? If it’s because he wants a higher salary that no one is willing to give, the Leafs should probably steer clear. However, if it’s simply a lack of interest — much like what happened with Jack Roslovic last summer — he might be worth a gamble.
He’s a 6’5, 230 lbs winger who can score 25-30 goals. He can be inconsistent, but he’s got skill. If his situation drags on, he might be willing to sign a show-me deal to prove last season wasn’t a one-off. On a roster that possesses the skill Toronto does, he could do much worse.
Patrik Laine
In much the same way Mantha might be a swing on a veteran scorer, Patrik Laine could be an option. The difference is, he’d be much less expensive. Frankly, this is a player who might have to settle for a PTO.
He’s great on a power play, but beyond that, there are questions about what he can bring to a team. If the Leafs want to limit the risk, just offer him a one-year, bonus-heavy contract. Make it up to him to earn his pay for next season.
