On Wednesday, Sept. 16, the Seattle Kraken announced an update to their leadership group. Defensemen Brandon Montour and Vince Dunn were named as alternate captains, receiving the “A” on their jerseys.
Jordan Eberle will remain as captain, with Matty Beniers and Adam Larsson as two of the team’s alternate captains.
In the 2025-26 season, Jaden Schwartz remained an alternate captain, but there was a vacancy left by the absence of Yanni Gourde, who was traded in the middle of the 2024-25 season. With both Schwartz and Gourde no longer a part of the Kraken organization, the team had to fill the two vacancies.
Like Eberle and Larsson, Dunn has been with the team since the beginning. He was claimed by the Kraken from the St. Louis Blues during their expansion draft. In his five seasons with Seattle, Dunn has played in 356 games and has notched 228 points. Even though he is a defenseman, he has also been a prominent member of the Kraken’s offense, sitting in third place on the all-time points leaderboard.
Dunn and Larsson are the two defensemen on the Kraken’s first defense pairing. They have been playing together for the majority of their time in Seattle, and they will continue to keep Seattle’s leadership group strong.
The second defenseman named to the Kraken’s leadership group hasn’t been with the team for the entirety of their time in the NHL, but he has quickly made a strong impact in his short span. Montour was signed by the Kraken as a free agent on July 1, 2024, to a seven-year contract. In his two seasons with the Kraken, he has played in 145 games and has recorded 73 points. Just like Dunn, he has also been a great addition to the Kraken’s score sheet.
Montour has often played on the second or third defense pairing, helping to train some of the younger players on the team, such as Ryker Evans and Josh Mahura. His mentorship has been a great help to these players, making him a great candidate for the “A”.
Both Dunn and Montour have done a great job in leading the defense. Now, they have earned a letter that helps prove their worth to the rest of the team.
With the Kraken setting the tone with their leadership group now finalized, the team will look to get off to a strong start heading into the 2026-27 season. The Kraken will open their training camp this week in preparation for their first preseason game on Saturday, Sept. 20, against the Vancouver Canucks. They open their season on the road against the Calgary Flames on Oct. 1.
