DeBrincat Wants to Remain In Detroit

Entering the final season of his four-year, $31.5 million contract, Alex DeBrincat noted on Tuesday that he wants to remain in Detroit despite the ongoing search for a new general manager, Dylan Larkin’s trade request, and Patrick Kane’s departure.

“When a new GM (is announced), I’m sure there’s going to be some conversations, but you know, as of right now, my opinion hasn’t changed,” DeBrincat told NHL.com. “I love playing for the Red Wings. I love wearing that jersey and battling with those guys out there. My intention is obviously to stay in Detroit.”

The 28-year-old is coming off the best offensive season of his career in Detroit, leading the Red Wings with 41 goals and 85 points. He has scored 107 goals in three seasons with the club, 10 more than Larkin over that span.

DeBrincat is eligible to sign a contract extension, but discussions are currently on hold until Detroit hires its next general manager. Despite the uncertainty, he said his focus has shifted toward preparing for the upcoming season.

Quinn Hughes’ Uncertainty Could Complicate Dylan Larkin’s Trade Request

Dylan Larkin’s preferred destination is believed to be the Minnesota Wild, with Team USA teammates Quinn Hughes, Matt Boldy, and Brock Faber already in place. But that appeal could disappear if Hughes ultimately decides Minnesota isn’t where he wants to spend his future.

Speaking with TSN on Tuesday, NHL insider Chris Johnston noted that Hughes has struggled to decide what he wants to do with his career. Hughes has long expressed a desire to eventually play with his brothers, Jack and Luke, while Johnston also noted that the defenseman enjoyed his time in Minnesota following last season’s trade.

If Hughes commits to Minnesota, the Wild remain an obvious destination for Larkin. But if Hughes isn’t willing to commit, Larkin may have to reconsider whether Minnesota is the right fit – and if other teams should be added to his trade list. 

Then again, maybe he rethinks the trade request altogether if Hughes’ future is up in the air.

Edvinsson Planning to Attend Training Camp

NHL columnist Pierre LeBrun reported Tuesday that Simon Edvinsson intends to report to camp even though the restricted free agent has yet to agree to a contract extension with Detroit.

Edvinsson, 23, has established himself as a key piece of Detroit’s blue line. The sixth-overall pick from the 2021 NHL Draft is expected to play a significant role alongside Moritz Seider in 2026-27 and now has the opportunity to prepare for the upcoming season with his teammates.

The Red Wings still need to reach an agreement with Edvinsson, who is one of the organization’s most important long-term assets. The length and value of his next contract could have significant implications for Detroit’s salary cap flexibility.

For now, Edvinsson’s decision to attend camp is a positive development for the Red Wings, even if his future contract remains unresolved – at least until a new GM is hired.
