The Vegas Golden Knights have made another significant decision, naming Ryan Craig as the fifth head coach in franchise history. The 44-year-old becomes the first Golden Knights coach who has never served as an NHL head coach. Since their inaugural season in 2017-18, the team has consistently relied on established names behind the bench. This time, however, Vegas turned inward.

Craig’s History With the Golden Knights

Craig joined the organization in 2017 as an assistant coach and remained with the club through 2023. During that time, he worked under Gerard Gallant, Peter DeBoer, and Bruce Cassidy, helping the Golden Knights evolve into one of the NHL’s model franchises.

Craig was also a member of the coaching staff that helped Vegas capture its first Stanley Cup championship in 2023. Following that season, he was promoted to head coach of the team’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, Henderson Silver Knights, where he spent the past three seasons gaining valuable experience running his own bench.

Vegas Takes a Different Approach

Gallant, DeBoer, Cassidy, and most recently John Tortorella all joined Vegas with NHL head coaching experience. By selecting Craig, General Manager Kelly McCrimmon has opted for familiarity and continuity over an established outside name. It’s a notable shift for a franchise that has typically prioritized proven NHL experience.

What Craig Will Bring to Vegas

One of Craig’s biggest strengths is his understanding of the organization. After nearly a decade within the Golden Knights’ system, he knows the expectations that come with coaching a Stanley Cup contender. For veterans like Jack Eichel, Mark Stone, and Shea Theodore, the transition should be smoother because he’s already familiar with the roster and culture.

Craig’s experience in Henderson will also be beneficial. He has spent the last three seasons working with the team’s young prospects and helping prepare them for the next level, potentially creating a stronger connection between the AHL and NHL clubs.

A New Golden Knights Chapter Begins

There will be questions surrounding a first-time NHL coach taking over a team with championship aspirations. However, few first-time coaches have had the opportunity to learn under respected names such as Gallant, DeBoer, Cassidy, and Tortorella.
