The Ontario Hockey League’s (OHL) Windsor Spitfires continue to check off items from the summer’s “to-do” list. On Thursday morning, they announced the signing of a major prospect who can help right away.
With numerous graduates this offseason, including captain Liam Greentree (New York Rangers), A.J. Spellacy (Chicago Blackhawks), and defenceman Carson Woodall (Boston College), the Spitfires knew that rebuilding the roster was not only necessary but also going to take time. General manager Bill Bowler started the process as soon as the 2026 Memorial Cup was done, and it continued on Thursday as they brought in a highly anticipated forward.
Spitfires Sign Svrcek
On Thursday, the club made it official by signing 19-year-old (2007-born) Detroit Red Wings’ prospect Michal Svrcek to an OHL scholarship and development agreement.
Svrcek was Bowler’s first pick in the 2025 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Import Draft last July. However, the 6-foot, 191-pound Zilina, Slovakia native was playing for Brynas IF in Sweden, splitting time between their J20 and Swedish Hockey League (SHL) teams. While he’s a Wings’ prospect (fourth round in 2025) and they play a half hour from the WFCU Centre in Windsor, he had a contract and couldn’t join the OHL.

In 2024-25, before being drafted by the Spitfires, Svrcek had 14 goals and 30 points in 30 games with the J20 team, plus another goal and three points in 17 SHL games. In 2025-26, he played 11 games for J20 with six goals and 18 points, had no points in 12 games for the SHL, and also played in 10 games (no points) on a loan to Vasteras IK in HockeyAllsvenskan (second-highest league in Sweden behind the SHL). He also has international experience, including playing five games for Team Slovakia at the 2026 World Junior Hockey Championship, where he contributed a goal and an assist.
However, now Svrcek is able to come to the OHL, and it’s an important signing for the Spitfires. In a statement, Svrcek said he can’t wait to get started.
“It is super exciting,” he said. “I’m super happy and looking forward to it.”

What does Svrcek bring to the table? He’s highly energetic, physical, and uses that bulldog mentality to frustrate opponents as well as produce. It’s the style the Spitfires like to play; gritty and tough in their own end while forcing turnovers and creating offence.
Bowler has been working hard to get Svrcek into town, and that’s finally paid off. He said this could make an immediate impact on the lineup.
“Svrcek is a world junior talent and will make an immediate impact for our club,” Bowler said. “We are excited to bring Michal to Windsor.”
Svrcek Joins New-Look Spitfires
After going all-in last season, the Spitfires knew they might have more graduates than normal. They’re seeing as many as 12 players leave the lineup, including Greentree, Spellacy, Woodall, goaltender Joey Costanzo, forward Nathan Villeneuve (Seattle Kraken), and forward Cole Davis (University of Connecticut). This means plenty of change for the roster next season.
Earlier in June, Bowler signed forwards Ty Bergeron (2025 OHL third round) and Hamza Havusic (2025 OHL Under-18 first round), plus defencemen Jesse Debruyn (2025 OHL fourth round) and Drake Gram (2024 OHL eighth round) to help replenish the depth charts.

Where does Svrcek fit into the lineup? He should get top-nine ice and could even see more early in the season. Spitfires’ head coach Greg Walters has rewarded players who show a consistent work ethic and do the little things right in both ends. If you play right, you’ll play often, giving Svrcek a real chance to get minutes if he can adjust to the systems quickly.
With this signing done, Bowler now focuses on the 2026 OHL Draft which goes Friday and Saturday from the Slush Puppy Place in Kingston. The draft is held in person for the first time since 2000 (has been online since then). The first round is Friday, where the Spitfires pick 16th overall, and then Rounds 2 through 15 happen on Saturday. The 2026 CHL Import Draft will be on Tues., June 30.
