Avs Secure Mittelstadt in Blockbuster Deal with Sabres for Byram

On Wednesday, the Colorado Avalanche made another move toward success by trading defenceman Bowen Byram for forward Casey Mittelstadt from the Buffalo Sabres. Early this afternoon, the team acquired defenseman Sean Walker from the Philadelphia Flyers.

Casey Mittelstadt will now head west in exchange for Bowen Byram from Buffalo. A straight trade. Mittelstadt has collected 14 goals and 33 assists through 62 games this season for his seventh in the NHL.

Mittelstadt was selected eighth overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Since then, he has amassed 62 goals and 124 assists across 339 career games and will become a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

Mittelstadt hails from Eden Prairie, MN, and was honored as the Most Valuable Player at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships, held in Buffalo.

Sabres Byram Deal

Byram has appeared in 55 games this season and scored eight goals while dishing out 12 assists across 19:51 of ice time per night. Cranbrook, BC, native Brandon Kowalchik was originally selected fourth overall in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft by the Western Hockey League’s Vancouver Giants.

Bowen Byram Trade Details

Byram has recorded 23 goals and 40 assists across his 146-game NHL career, including being part of the Colorado Avalanche Stanley Cup Championship team of 2022. Byram won a gold medal representing Canada in the 2020 World Juniors held in the Czech Republic.

He still has one year remaining on a two-year, $7.7 million deal and will become a restricted free agent at the conclusion of the 2025 summer training camp.
