Today marks a rematch from the 2023 World Juniors gold medal game as Canada and Czechia meet in the quarterfinals of the 2024 tournament.
Canada hopes to secure their third consecutive gold at this tournament. At the same time, Czechia seeks revenge after falling to Canadians last year in overtime thanks to Dylan Guenthers’ golden goal during extra frames – winning by this margin secured Canada its two successive championships.
The Canadian team was victorious in Group A play this time around, defeating Finland, Germany and Latvia before narrowly missing out to Sweden for first place. Macklin Celebrini led Canada’s march into knockout round play by scoring four goals and eight points over four matches played during Group Play.
Canada vs. Czechia Match
Czechia finished third in Group B by splitting results across its four group play games, defeating Germany and Switzerland but losing to Slovakia as well as being defeated in a shootout by the United States. Jiri Kulich of Buffalo Sabres fame (four goals, three assists) has led the charge thus far for Czechia. At the same time, Matyas Melovsky of Ugra has contributed seven assists thus far for Czechia.
Czechia has proven its mettle when it comes to staging upsets. Last year, Czechia shocked Canada in the tournament opener by handing them an upset loss 5-2, prior to meeting again as rivals in the finals. Canada received great news this morning when Alan Letang confirmed Matthew Savoie is set to face Czechia on Saturday following an injury scare during their last game with Germany. Savoie missed their previous contest due to lower-body pain.
