On Sunday night at James Madison University’s James Arena in Madison Heights, Jared McCain hit an NCAA tournament record 8 3-pointers as Duke men’s basketball defeated James Madison with an overwhelming 93-55 score and advanced to the Sweet 16 of 2024 NCAA Tournament Second Round play. Tyrese Proctor scored 18 total points, while Roach and Filipowski each contributed 15. They joined McCain as double-figure scorers, with Tyrese scoring 30, Tyrese scoring 15, and Filipowski contributing 14.

HOW IT OCCURRED Duke opened up scoring from outside, as Jared McCain made an immediate statement by sinking a 3-pointer during their opening possession of the game. A pull-up jumper from Jeremy Roach and Kyle Filipowski’s dunk put Duke ahead early (7-2). When Duke reached their first timeout of the half, McCain hit another 3-pointer to extend their advantage up to 12-4 and ensure a decisive advantage at halftime.
McCain continued her strong play from deep after halftime, hitting another 3-pointer from distance that gave Duke its first double-digit advantage of the game at 15-5. Tyrese Proctor added back-to-back 3-pointers as time ticked away toward 12 minutes remaining; on their next possession McCain knocked down yet another long ranger and caused a timeout with JMU timeout being called.

McCain tied Duke freshman NCAA Tournament record of made 3-pointers by sinking five threes within seven minutes before halftime and put Duke ahead 31-16, leading them into their next timeout comfortably ahead 40-19 after Filipowski laid up for Duke – prompting JMU’s second timeout of first half play.
Duke Sweet 16 victory
McCain immediately set the program record with seven 3-pointers after halftime in an NCAA Tournament game, and Filipowski converted on an immediate three-point play for a 53-27 victory.
McCain scored 30 points from long range while setting a new Duke program record for 3-pointers made during an NCAA Tournament game, Proctor made his fourth 3-pointer of the night, and Roach hit his inaugural three-point shot soon after that, putting Duke ahead by 27, 74-46 with 10 minutes remaining in regulation time.

Sean Stewart scored on two alley-oop dunks, and TJ Power added three 3-pointers, giving Duke a 90-53 advantage at the final media timeout before ultimately going on to claim a 93-55 win. NOTES

Duke shot an NCAA Tournament-best 14 3-pointers on 28 attempts to make up at least half of their 3-point attempts and finish with at least 50 percent 3-point shot success six consecutive times this season. They recorded 93 points – equaling their highest total since defeating UNC-Wilmington by that score on March 17, 2016.

Duke recorded their third-highest scoring output this season against JMU, surpassing even Queens’ 106-69 score in December 2023, which stands as their previous season-high point total and also JMU’s single-season point total allowed in regulation play this year.
The Blue Devils’ 38-point victory marks the largest margin of victory since Tulsa defeated them 97-56 on March 14, 1999, in their NCAA Tournament second-round contest.
Duke held JMU to 55 points on defence – matching their season low and falling 29.0 below its season average of 84.0 points scored per game – maintaining 29 out of 34 opponents below their scoring average for an impressive performance by the Blue Devils in defeating them all!
Duke recorded 22 assists on 33 made field goals, marking their sixth 20-plus assist performance of this campaign. Duke only turned over the ball six times compared to 14 for JMU, thus producing a 24-4 lead in points-off-turnovers for themselves.
Duke NCAA Tournament win
The Blue Devils tallied 12 steals on defence, their best total ever this season and moved their record up to 121-40 (.752) all-time in NCAA Tournament competition with at least 20 games played – which represents their best winning percentage ever in such an event.
Jared McCain made eight 3-pointers during Duke’s NCAA Tournament win against Mercer on March 21, 2014, surpassing Quinn Cook’s mark of seven triples made on that night. McCain’s efforts set a new school record.
McCain became only the second freshman ever from Duke to score 30 or more points in an NCAA Tournament game since Zion Williamson set his program’s freshman scoring record with 32 against UCF on March 22, 2019.
McCain scored 22 first-half points at Florida State to tie Duke’s rookie record of 3-pointers made, also setting off an NCAA tournament record.
McCain made history without making one turnover during her performance, becoming the first freshman since NCAA expansion to 64 teams in 1985 to score at least 30 points without turning over any possession. Tyrese Proctor added four 3-pointers and 18 total points during this impressive win for Virginia Commonwealth University.

Duke now leads with a 13-1 record when Proctor hits at least three three-point shots from beyond the arc. Jeremy Roach scored 15 points while dishing six assists while not making any turnovers himself.
Kyle Filipowski also reached double figures, recording 14 points – his third consecutive double-figure performance over four contests – while also contributing five rebounds, four assists, two steals and blocking shots. Mark Mitchell earned five rebounds, four assists and a team-leading three steals for an excellent overall effort from him and his squad.
Ryan Young and Sean Stewart made an immediate impact off Duke’s bench to grab an outstanding six rebounds each – giving each an outstanding showing in terms of teammate production.
