The Edmonton Oilers are coming off a strong season that saw them reach the Stanley Cup Final. With a new face at the helm and some key additions, they’re looking to take that final step this year.
Fresh Faces Joining the Oilers
The Oilers bolstered their offense by signing veteran forwards Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson. Skinner, a proven scorer, could find himself playing alongside superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Arvidsson, healthy after battling injuries last season, adds depth and experience to the top six. On the back end, Josh Brown brings size and physicality to fill the void left by Vincent Desharnais.
Saying Goodbye to Familiar Faces
The Oilers saw some departures this offseason, including valuable forwards Warren Foegele and Ryan McLeod (traded for top prospect Matthew Savoie) and depth defenseman Vincent Desharnais. Goalie Jack Campbell also departed, leaving a question mark in the net behind the starter, Stuart Skinner.
Young Guns on the Horizon
The acquisition of Matthew Savoie, the highly-touted prospect from Buffalo, adds excitement to the Oilers’ future. While he might start in the AHL, he could crack the NHL roster eventually. Raphael Lavoie, another young forward, has shown promise and could find himself playing a bottom-six role. Roby Jarventie, acquired from the Senators, brings size and skill to the competition for a bottom-six spot.
Missing Pieces to the Puzzle
The Oilers are still searching for a permanent general manager after Ken Holland’s departure. CEO Jeff Jackson has filled the role temporarily but is actively looking for a replacement. Additionally, while the Oilers have a strong core, depth on defense remains a concern. Depending on the performance of Troy Stecher and Josh Brown, they might seek an upgrade on the blue line.
Looking Ahead: Championship Dreams
Despite the departures, the Oilers remain optimistic. Jeff Jackson believes the team culture, established by Ken Holland, makes Edmonton a desirable destination for players. With a talented core and some key additions, the Oilers are poised for another strong season and a legitimate shot at the Stanley Cup.
