Windsor Spitfires Sign 2026 OHL First-Round Pick Lauchlan Whelan – The Hockey Writers –

While the summer is heating up, the Windsor Spitfires continue to focus on the 2026-27 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) season with an important signing on Tuesday.

Spitfires’ general manager Bill Bowler has been busy since the 2025-26 season ended in early May. After they were eliminated by the eventual-Memorial Cup Champion Kitchener Rangers in the Western Conference Championship, the club has been reshaping its roster to prepare for September. With prospects like forward Ty Bergeron (2025 OHL Draft) and defenceman Sam Wathier (2024 OHL Draft) already locked up, the process continued on Tuesday with another major signing.

Whelan Signs with Spitfires

The club made it official on Tuesday by signing 2026 OHL Draft first-round pick forward Lauchlan Whelan to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement.

The 6-foot, 165-pound Coburg native was chosen 16th overall in the draft, which was held in Kingston, Ontario in mid-June. Last season, he played for the Quinte Red Devils U16 AAA, his third season with that program. In 34 games, he had 32 goals and 54 points, along with another 12 goals and 15 points in eight playoff games.

Whelan attended the Spitfires’ Draft Orientation in late June and was all smiles throughout the event. You could tell he was genuinely excited to be a part of it. In a press release, he said this signing is a big moment for him and his family and he’s looking forward to doing whatever it takes to help the organization.

“I am incredibly honoured to sign with (the Spitfires),” Whelan said. “It is a special moment for me and my family because of all the sacrifices that have been made to get here. I am grateful to the organization for believing in me, and I know this is only the start. I am excited to come in every day with a strong work ethic, good character, keep improving and do whatever I can to help the team succeed.”

As soon as Bowler walked onto the stage in Kingston, he didn’t hesitate to pick Whelan. The youngster brings a quick, exciting pace to the offence and loves playing the 200-foot game. Bowler said Whelan is the type of player that fans are going to enjoy.

“(Whelan) is a dynamic and talented forward,” he said. “He competes at both ends of the ice and we look forward to his exciting style of play. We welcome him and his family to the Spitfires!”

Golden Opportunity for Youngster?

With the signing official, where does Whelan fit into the Spitfires’ lineup for 2026-27? Last season, the Spitfires went on a playoff run with numerous high-end veterans on the roster. However, now they see a lot of those veterans graduating. From captain Liam Greentree (New York Rangers) to forward A.J. Spellacy (Chicago Blackhawks), plus Michigan State University commit forward Ethan Belchetz (Utah Mammoth) and University of Michigan commit forward Jack Nesbitt (Philadelphia Flyers), there are holes in the lineup that won’t be easily replaced.

While Bowler has signed Bergeron and Detroit Red Wings’ prospect Michal Svrcek up front, it’s still a golden opportunity for Whelan to not only step into the lineup and contribute but possibly even move up before too long.

Spitfires’ head coach Greg Walters has never been shy about playing anyone who works hard and deserves it, regardless of age. In 2024-25, injuries piled up and rookie forward Ethan Garden earned playing time through his no-quit style of game. Last season, first-round pick forward John McLaughlin didn’t stop moving on the ice and earned the trust of the coaches very early in the season. He moved up in the lineup and should have a solid chance at a top-six spot in September.

That doesn’t mean Whelan is expecting it, though. He told us at the Draft Orientation that, even with a possibility of moving up in the lineup, everything has to be earned.

“It’s just opportunity, another spot that I can prove myself,” Whelan said at the camp. “There’s nothing that’s been earned yet. It all has to be worked for, something you have to accomplish. I have an amazing staff here to help me get to that point and I’m really looking forward to this upcoming season.”

It’s been a busy stretch for the club. Now, on top of any more signings, they look ahead to the OHL summer trade freeze lifting in early August and 2026-27 training camp at the end of August. While the summer is in full force, hockey isn’t far off.
